Catalign Quarterly - December 2012

Design Thinking

Catalign Quarterly is an attempt to put together insights relevant for fostering a culture of innovation in organizations – both for-profit and not-for-profit. Through articles and interviews we explore principles, practices and policies that help organizations become more innovative.

Theme for this quarterly is “Design thinking” – an approach to problem solving that emphasizes empathy, rapid prototyping, process focus and cross-functional collaboration. The main article, 4 tenets of design thinking, explores each of the 4 dimensions.

The other articles are:

Can empathy be taught? This article explores experimentation with techniques like empathy walk at MIT.

Gandhi’s 3rd class railway travel during 1915 and 1917. This article shows how Gandhi gained deep understanding of the psyche of Indians by spending one in four days in third class railway compartment for the first 2.5 years since his arrival from South Africa.

Edison syndrome and the pitfall of technology centric innovation approach. Here we explore how the inventor of phonograph lost the market share in the phonograph business by focusing only on technology solutions for each problem.

4 things that impressed me in Prof. Karl Ulrich’s design course at coursera.org. I just finished a course on design taught by Prof. Karl Ulrich of Wharton School. This article summarizes the 4 things that impressed me: lecture-cum-demonstration style teaching, experiential learning, peer evaluation and active discussion forum.

The theme for the next quarterly is going to be “effectiveness of innovation campaigns”.
